From The Director
August 2006
In Bakersfield , the end of summer means temperatures climb into the mid-nineties and it's time for “Back to School.” Academic success is a result both of what happens at home as well as in the classroom. As parents, what can we do to enhance our children's triumphs?
Regularly have dinner together, at the table: no TV, no “grilling,” just conversation. Share your day, ask questions, and tell stories. “What was your favorite part of the day?”
Make expressions of love and affection happen every day. If your teen can't tolerate hugs and kisses, tussle their hair or twist a few strands; pat their shoulder or touch their arm.
Catch them being good at least once a day. And be sure and let them know it.
Have family meetings. Assign chores, discuss and solve family issues, and plan activities together.
Create a sense of calm and routine. Have regular meal, bed, bath and story times. From an early age, children need chores. They learn a skill and feel like an active member of the family.
When children feel safe and treasured at home, they will surely have a head start at school.
